Mooneyes Equipment has been a fixture in the hot rod scene since the 50’s, it’s bright yellow cars instantly recognizable on the dry lake beds and drag strips of old and new. In early December the company hosts an Xmas Party, which has grown through a handful of venues over the years. For the past 7 or 8, the Irwindale Event Center has hosted the grand gala, which has allowed for sufficient space not just for the car show, live bands, pinup contests and vendors, but also heads up drag racing. Unfortunately the skies opened up once again this year and soaked the track, preventing any of the gassers, front engine dragsters, tube frame VW’s and traditional hot rods from smoking any rubber. The rain didn’t seem to slow down the crowd too much though, as there was still an impressive selection of vintage iron on display.
With Mooneyes’ roots firmly planted in hot rods, dragsters and streamliners, they’re also heavily supportive of motorcycles, choppers in particular, so there’s rarely a shortage of great bikes on display. The rain did unfortunately seem to keep more of the 2 wheelers at home, but it’s a safe bet to mark the first weekend of December on your 2014 calendar and make the drive/ride to Irwindale.
